When chosing your next area rug consider it’s pattern to make narrow down your selection.
The pattern of an area rug could best be defined as the way that lines are used to form the shapes on the area rug. There are three different pattern categories used in area rug making. The three types are: curvilinear, geometric, & pictorial. The first two patterns stated are typically used in area rugs with convential motifs, with straight or curving lines. Pictorial area rugs are a much smaller group of rugs that often portray people or animals. By dividing area rugs into three main patterns it is much easier to chose the right area rug by immediately eliminating the rugs you don’t want to have. An area rug is always categorized by its most dominate pattern. To explain further, an area rug with curvilinear patterns may have floral designs or birds or a paisley pattern. An area rug with a geometric pattern may also include designs such as flowers or birds but with typical straight edges on the pattern. A good example of a geometric pattern would be a southwestern style area rug. Pictorial rugs have become increasingly more popular with the ability to design rugs by machine. Now nearly any shape can be woven into an area rug from horses to roosters or chickens to Santa Claus or a patriotic flag. Which ever your style or taste, each area rug will express your own niche.Â
